Macaulay’s Account of the Siege of Londonderry

An extract of Lord Macaulay's “History of England”

This account of the Siege of Derry is an extract of Lord Macaulay’s “History of England”. Events not directly relating to the Siege have been omitted. It is generally accepted that Lord Macaulay’s work is not free from inaccuracies. No attempt, however, has been made at correction by re-writing any part of the work.

This extract is a reproduction of a publication printed in 1937 and sold in aid of the re-building of the Apprentice Boys’ Memorial Hall in Londonderry.

In publishing this online we have made no amendments to the content. We have however, split it into smaller sections and changed the paragraph layout to hopefully make it easier to read online.

Once complete a download of the entire extract will be available in the original form.
